Engaging in Collaboration & The Two-Year College Option

For many of our students, two-year colleges offer an important option for transitioning from K-12 to four-year colleges. And for other students, two-year colleges provide important coursework for career trajectories. I’ve attended three community colleges throughout my academic tenure and certainly will affirm the value of coursework that led to a teaching career in science.

Nearly all educators will support the value of student access to content rich learning environments. We pursue education because most of us see ourselves making a difference for others and being an active participant in having a positive impact on the lives of others. For those of us who share a love for science, we see possibilities. These possibilities lead to career options, perhaps in STEM, or maybe we simply understand the importance of supporting a world where STEM literacy creates a better world for all of us. Though we all have different perspectives on how to create these outcomes, we might, however, all agree that these outcomes are worth pursuing.

Collaboration between K-12 and post-secondary science educators is one way to better support the outcome of increased STEM literacy. How are we to chart a course without knowing where we are going? This upcoming fall, the California Science Teachers Association will be hosting its annual conference. What better way to reach out and share your ideas, discuss your concerns, and make connections with other science teachers who share a vision for the whole enterprise of science education?

Some might say that extensive efforts for coordination are essential. Perhaps. But what can be done now? Two-year community college professors and K-12 teachers are having a shaping effect now. By engaging in the CSTA network, our work becomes clearer and we are able to appreciate each other’s roles in the whole enterprise of science education. Our goals seem more attainable. Our work to make science learning meaningful for all students becomes more meaningful for ourselves.

Of specific interest is our work towards implementing curriculum that supports congruent learning between K-12 school systems and two-year colleges. How does NGSS effect our two-year
colleges and their ability to support students in learning science? This question is being asked by many community colleges across the state and through our cooperative work within CSTA, we hope to coordinate opportunities designed to better support resources, professional development, and improved coordination.

But, however, none of these outcomes can be made possible without our involved two-year college membership. Their growing support, time, and experience has helped generate momentum. For those not yet involved, your CSTA asks for your consideration to contribute towards shaping science education. Rather predicated by the demands of business or industry, policy or practicality, engaging in the collaborative work with other science educators, will likely benefit us all.

The Council of Math/Science Educators of San Mateo County will be hosting the 41st annual STEM Conference this February 4, 2017 at the San Mateo County Office of Education. This STEM Conference is the place to get lots of new lessons and ideas to use in your classroom. There will be over twenty-five workshops and a variety of exhibitors that provide participants with a wide range of practical and realistic ideas and resources to use in their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs from Pre-K to grade 12. With California’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, we are dedicated to ensuring that we prepare our teachers to take on these educational policies.

Teachers, administrators and parents are invited to explore the many exciting aspects of STEM education and learn about and discuss the latest news, information and issues. This is also an opportunity to network with colleagues who can assist you in building your programs and meet new friends that share your interests and love of teaching.

Submit Your NGSS Lessons and Units Today!

Achieve has launched and is facilitating an EQuIP Peer Review Panel for Science–a group of expert reviewers who will evaluate the quality and alignment of lessons and units to the standards–in an effort to identify and shine a spotlight on emerging high-quality lesson and unit plans designed for the NGSS.

Opportunity for High School Students – Los Angeles County

An upcoming Perry Outreach Program on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Orthopaedic Institute for Children in Los Angeles, CA. The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Science Education Policy Update

January 2017 has proven to be a very busy month for science education policy and CA NGSS implementation activities. CSTA has been and will be there every step of the way, seeking and enacting all options to support high-quality science education and the successful implementation of CA NGSS.

California Department of Education/U.S. Department of Education Science Double-Testing Waiver Hearing

The year started with California Department of Education’s (CDE) hearing with the U.S. Department of Education conducted via WebEx on January 6, 2017. This hearing was the final step in California’s efforts to secure a waiver from the federal government in order to discontinue administration of the old CST and suspension of the reporting of student test scores on a science assessment for two years. As reported by EdSource, the U.S. Department of Education representative, Ann Whalen, a senior adviser to U.S. Secretary John King Jr., committed to making her final ruling “very shortly.” Deputy Superintendent Keric Ashley presented on behalf of CDE during the hearing and did an excellent job describing the broad-based support for this waiver in California, the rationale for the waiver, and California’s commitment to the successful implementation of a new high-quality science assessment. As previously reported, California is moving forward with its plans to administer a census pilot assessments this spring. The testing window is set to open on March 20, 2017.
