Foothill Observatory is open for public viewing every clear Friday evening from 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Visitors can view the wonders of the universe through the observatory’s new computer-controlled 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Views of objects in our solar system may include craters and mountains on the moon, the moons and cloud-bands of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, etc. The choice of targets for any evening’s viewing depends on the season and what objects are currently in the sky.
On clear, dark, moonless nights, the telescopes give visitors views into the deeper reaches of space. Star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies provide dramatic demonstrations of the vastness of the cosmos.
Confirm before you go that the observatory will be open!
The public viewing programs at Foothill are free of charge and are open to guests of all ages. Please note that the observatory is closed when the weather is cloudy. Also note that visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots for $3.00.

Chemistry Teacher Workshop (all-day) @ Ohio Northern UniversityJun 17 – Jun 21
Ohio Northern University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is hosting a rewarding five-day workshop specifically designed to provide high school chemistry teachers with a unique professional development opportunity.
The 30-hour workshop features lecture, laboratory and networking time:
• Use a Vernier spectrophotometer and Vernier probes • Conduct associated laboratory exercises • Modify and troubleshoot existing protocols • Participate in discussion sessions • Receive a Vernier instrument for use in your home educational institution • Join specialized breakout seminar/laboratory periods

Eligibility
All teachers who teach at least one high school course in chemistry are invited to apply. Applications are due by March 1. Download the 2012 Brochure. (The 2013 Brochure will be coming soon!)
Support
All accepted teachers will be awarded a $1,200 grant that will cover housing, registration fees, some meals and purchase of a Vernier scientific instrument. Some travel grants (up to $300) also are available.
Schedule/Accommodations
Click here for a schedule for the workshop from 2012. Participants will stay in the Campus Village Apartments. These on-campus accommodations are air-conditioned and include wireless Internet, linens, common/living areas, kitchens and private baths.

Exploring Climate Change Through Scientific Storytelling and the Green Ninja Film Academy

What?: Teaching science presents many challenges, including engaging student interest in ways that are meaningful and relevant to their own lives. This session will focus on how to guide your students through a science-based filmmaking experience using relatively simple tools and the Green Ninja (http://www.greenninja.org/) as a storyline. This standards-based workshop will combine climate science content with the essentials of film making to help you support your students in making science-based movies! Climate science-related topics will include themes of food, water and energy.
Who?: Teachers of grade 6 – 12 with an interest in using storytelling and film to help engage their students in climate science topics.
When? July 8-10, 2013; 9:00 am – 3:30 pm each day
Where?: Room 306 Duncan Hall, San José State University
Why?:
- Receive a $450 stipend plus $150 more if you implement workshop materials in your classes and attend a Saturday follow-up session

Geoscape Bay Area for Earth Sciences Teachers (all-day) @ Stanford UniversityJul 8 – Jul 11
You are invited to a workshop for science teachers about Earth sciences in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here you will learn about current scientific research and understanding of the local geoscape. A geoscape is a way to look at the geological landscape – water resources, natural hazards, and earth resources. This workshop is to enhance your skills, confidence, and knowledge of Earth sciences and invigorate classroom instruction, aligned with California State content standards. You will be taught to use to the Quake-catcher Network which turns your classroom computer into a seismometer. Special this summer, you will learn about climate change in California and the climate change curriculum.

Who: California 6th grade teachers
When: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm each day
Where: Room 306 Duncan Hall, San José State University
You are invited to help NASA develop innovative and engaging lessons focused on climate change science! In this workshop keyed to the California science standards (including the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards), you’ll learn about natural and human-caused climate change and its environmental, societal and economic impacts, become familiar with NASA’s contributions to climate change science, and explore newly-developed multimedia educational tools featuring climate-action superhero, The Green Ninja! http://www.greenninja.info/).
Over the course of the week, you will collaborate with your colleagues and workshop instructors to develop new and/or adapt existing climate science-based lesson plans to best suit your particular instructional needs. Once completed, these lesson plans will be made available to teachers across the country.
Why
- Earn a $500 stipend (you must attend all five days and complete workshop lesson-development tasks)
- Earn an additional $400 for implementing at least two workshop lessons in your classroom, and attending two Saturday follow-up sessions during the school year

A Hands-on Workshop on Astronomy for Teachers in Grades 3-12 from the Galileo Teacher Training Program
Explore the Universe through classroom-tested, standards-based, hands-on astronomy activities. Discover investigations and techniques to help teach astronomy and space science in the context of the Next Generation Science Standards. Learn how you can engage your students from diverse and underserved populations in science through their astronomical heritage.
