Upcoming 2013 Public Lecture Schedule
Monthly lectures are usually scheduled for the last Thursday evening of each month during most of the year but are occasionally presented on the preceding Thursday evening to accommodate our speakers. Also, the November and December lectures are scheduled earlier in the month to avoid conflicting with speaker and customer plans during the holiday season.

Come to Foothill Observatory and join us in the exploration of our Universe!
Foothill Observatory is open for public viewing every clear Friday evening from 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Visitors can view the wonders of the universe through the observatory’s new computer-controlled 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Views of objects in our solar system may include craters and mountains on the moon, the moons and cloud-bands of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, etc. The choice of targets for any evening’s viewing depends on the season and what objects are currently in the sky.
On clear, dark, moonless nights, the telescopes give visitors views into the deeper reaches of space. Star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies provide dramatic demonstrations of the vastness of the cosmos.
Confirm before you go that the observatory will be open!
The public viewing programs at Foothill are free of charge and are open to guests of all ages. Please note that the observatory is closed when the weather is cloudy. Also note that visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots for $3.00.

BAESI Saturday Workshop: Mt. Diablo to Marin Field Trip @ San Jose State University, Duncan Hall, Room 3068:30 am – 4:30 pm
Bay Area Earth Science Institute (BAESI) workshops for teachers of grades 4-12 are free, address California science standards, and present a blend of science concepts and ready-to-use classroom activities for teaching them. Each workshop or field trip meets from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and will take place in room 306 Duncan Hall on the San José State University (SJSU) campus unless otherwise noted.
If you need SJSU credit, you may combine any two sessions to earn 1 unit of Geology 104 for $50.Angela Hessler (Chevron), Tim McHargue (Stanford), Will Schweller (retired Chevron)
We will drive across one of the most amazing geologic transects in the world. You will see a diversity of rock types that together tell a remarkable story of plate collisions, mid-ocean volcanoes, and submarine landslides. We will identify rocks not just by their physical characteristics, but also by the processes that formed them, and by the processes that put them in their modern positions. And we will illustrate all of this with geologic maps – how the rocks are distributed today – as well as with paleogeographic maps – what the Bay Area looked like at different points in its natural history.

Multimedia for the Biology Classroom with PBS LearningMedia @ Online4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join KQED and CSTA for one of four area specific science webinars and learn the ropes around PBS LearningMedia, a collection of thousands of digital media resources from KQED and other public media stations for the K-12 science classroom. Experienced science educators give an example of a media-rich lesson and present strategies for successfully incorporating multimedia into the classroom. NOTE: Each webinar is subject area specific (Environmental Science, K- 5, Physics, Biology).
This one-hour webinar will engage science educators in a wealth of multimedia resources from PBS LearningMedia, a media library from PBS and WGBH.
PBS LearningMedia is the next generation media library produced by PBS and WBGH. The free repository has 20,000 video clips, interactive games, images, and lesson plans for educators’ use. Sacramento Earth Day Celebration at Southside Park @ Southside Park11:00 am – 4:00 pm
The 7th annual celebration will be filled with diverse businesses, both non-profit and cultural, and vendors with practical information. They will be displaying their goods and services for saving money, living well, and protecting the environment. There will be great entertainment and activities.
