In this program, just for teachers, SFMC is sponsoring monthly real-food dinners with a special Math Circle speaker. The April Teachers’ Circle will be led by Jim Tanton of Thinking Mathematics, http://www.jamestanton.com/. James Tanton (PhD. Mathematics, Princeton University, 1994) is a research mathematician deeply interested in bridging the gap between the mathematics experienced by school students and the creative mathematics practiced and explored by mathematicians. He is now a full-time high school teacher and does all that he can to bring joy into mathematics learning and teaching. James writes math books. He gives math talks and conducts math workshops. http://www.sfmathcircle.org/teacherscircle.html

Join The Center to Support Excellence in Teaching at Stanford University for a Summer of Learning

A Summer Professional Development Institute for K-12 Teachers hosted at Stanford University

The Stanford Summer Teaching Institute (SSTI) offers professional development courses in July – August of 2012 (from 3 days to 2 weeks). These courses have been specifically designed for teachers and leaders to practice new methods and innovate with new learning materials for classrooms and schools. In these exciting offerings for 2012, SSTI participants can expect to deepen their understanding of both the content they teach, as well as teaching itself, while connecting and re-connecting with colleagues.

Taught by renowned Stanford faculty and education practitioners from various departments across campus, including English, earth sciences, chemistry, and art history, the CSET Summer Institutes provide participating teachers and leaders with world-class instruction in developing and applying new techniques and teaching practices aligned with the Common Core Content Standards. Participants receive expert intellectual feedback that is tailored specifically to their classroom contexts. CSET’s emphasis on collaborative professionalism provides teachers and leaders the opportunity to spread what they have learned, continue collaborating, and continually improve learning opportunities for their students. Last year, we had over 250 teachers and leaders participate and 95% of them ranked SSTI as being their top professional development experiences.
