The California Science Teachers Association (CSTA) invites Los Angeles Area middle school science teachers to attend a meeting, hosted by South Pasadena Middle School, regarding the proposed arrangement of the middle school Performance Expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for California on Wednesday, August 7th (see details below).
As you may be aware, NGSS combines science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and cross cutting concepts so that students learn and apply “knowledge in use.” The proposed model for the middle school arrangement of the performance expectations (PEs) includes PEs from earth, life, physical, and engineering in each grade. The State Board of Education will consider voting on the NGSS for California at their next board meeting in September.
This meeting on August 7th will provide information to middle grade science teachers about the arrangement of the Performance Expectations for grades 6, 7, and 8th and to provide an opportunity for collaborative discussion. Teachers planning to attend the meeting will be emailed a copy of CDE Middle School Standards Placement rationale document to preview prior to the meeting so that a productive discussion may ensue. This document will explain the arrangement of the standards, articulation from elementary school through middle school, alignment with Common Core, and possible “storylines” for each grade level including integration of crosscutting concepts. (This rationale document is currently being formatted and will soon be placed on the CDE website for all to view.)
This meeting will also be a great opportunity to meet some science education leaders including Kathy DiRanna (CSTA member and the State-wide Director for WestEd’s K-12 Alliance, Kathy worked with the Science Expert Panel which helped place the NGSS standards at each grade), Nikki Chambers (CSTA member and teacher participant in the Science Expert Panel), Anthony Quan (CSTA member and LACOE STEM Consultant), and Jill Grace (CSTA Middle School Director and 7th grade science teacher).
When: August 7, 2013
Where: South Pasadena Middle School Library, 1500 Fair Oaks Avenue, South Pasadena, CA 91030
RSVP: Emily Williams, Middle School Teacher and CSTA member – email@example.com
CSTA is strongly supporting the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards. We recognize that there are many implementation issues in bringing about the vision of NGSS and we are committed to leading the effort to provide quality support from the educational system. CSTA has offered to work with CDE and the State Board of education to provide the professional development teachers will need to effectively implement the standards, as well as advocate that science teacher professional development be a priority for the State.
We look forward to meeting you at this meeting.
