Learning Physics by Doing Physics
As California science teachers we’ve all heard of the Exploratorium, and I am hoping that most of us have had the pleasure of spending some time there. The Exploratorium is the Grand Dame of hands-on science museums. In addition to the wonderful facility, The Exploratorium hosts workshops for teachers, and publishes books. Their vision includes a focus on learners exploring and making sense of their world through inquiry. A key contributor to that exciting edifice of science education is 2012 California Science Education Conference Focus Speaker Paul Doherty.The author of numerous books and articles and a leader for the Exploratorium’s Teacher Institutes, Doherty is an expert in helping us learn to guide our students through science. He knows how important it is for us to have instruction that is guided by student questions and interest. More importantly, he knows how to help us figure out how to negotiate the classroom in ways that enable students to be actively exploring and doing science as opposed to just hearing about science.
On Sunday morning Doherty will be modeling inquiry and exploration with us in a session called “Learn Physics by Doing Physics”. You don’t need to be a physics teacher to be inspired in this session! The investigation process he will show us works for other content areas as well. While students doing inquiry and exploring a variety of topics may seem chaotic, Doherty will help us learn how to negotiate that chaos in ways that bring it to our desired conclusion. He will then help us see how these strategies might fit into the practices espoused in the Next Generation Science Standards. SOL Grotto is a contemporary take on a grotto or Throeau’s cabin – a spartan retreat that is a space of solitude and close to nature – where one is presented with a mediated experience of water, coolness and light. The SOL Grotto also explores Solyndra’s role as a company S#@t Out of Luck. 1,368 of the 24 million high tech glass tubes destined to be destroyed as a casualty of their bankruptcy, are used in the installation. The tube’s original role as a light concentrating element is extended to transmit cool air into the space via the Venturi effect, to amplify sounds from the adjacent waterfall via the vibrations of the tubes cantilevering over the creek, and to create distorted views of the garden. The form of the electric blue array evokes Plato’s Allegory of the Cave where shadows, light and sounds can call reality into question.”

Congratulations to CSTA member and STEM Educator, Katherine Schenkelberg, of West High School, in Torrance, CA! Katherine was recently awarded one of the 2013 Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards. Members of the California Science Teachers Association are now in the process of voting for qualified CSTA members to fill the seven openings on the CSTA Board of Directors for the 2013-2015 term.
The election is being conducted electronically and opened for voting on April 16, 2013. Voting will close on May 16, 2013. All CSTA members were sent links to the online ballot.
